For me, the
northwest of Tenerife is the most beautiful part of the island. Teno
Range (the tip at the northwest of the island) is perhaps the parts
of the island that retains its most natural and charming aspect. These are some places and activities that I like in that area:
- Relax in the main square having a coffee and enjoying the local atmosphere.
- Taste the sweets from El Aderno.
- Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings.
- Go to Masca and enjoy the Teno’s rugged landscape along its narrow road. (Locationon Google Maps). Unfortunately, it is currently prohibited to go down to Masca beach.
- Eating in one of the restaurants in the center or the famous Roast Chicken, which I love, in El Palmar (Location on Google Maps) Although on weekends could be big queues.
- Visit Teno Alto. You can go by car and enjoy the tiny road that winds through the mountains of Teno and once there, leave the car, enjoy its cuisine and visit the landscape and the cheese factories on foot. As I like walking in the countryside, I like reaching Teno Alto by foot. To do this I go to the fence that controls access to Punta de Teno. (Location in Google Maps) and follow the path that goes up on a demanding climb to Teno Alto. I like going early, having lunch up in Teno and enjoying the descent and the views along the same path in the afternoon.
- Buenavista Golf.
- Relax in the main square having a coffee and enjoying the local atmosphere.
- If you are in early December and you understand Spanish, I suggest you to go to the storytelling festival. The perfect match for Los Silos.
- Enjoy an alternative music and art festival in September: Boreal. Also, a perfect match.
- Farmer's Market: Sunday mornings.
- Hikes: the trails in Teno are for me one of the most beautiful on the island. On the Official Cabildo Website you can access the file of all the approved trails. Among them, I really like the trail number 53, leaving from Los Silos and arriving at Erjos for lunch, to return the same way.
- Stroll leisurely through the Historic Center at night.
- Dine in one of its restaurants. I love Casa Gaspar, although it is not cheap. - Location on Google Maps
TEIDE.
El Teide, La
Orotava, El Puerto de la Cruz, etc., are must-see sites in the
island, so there is a lot of information on Internet. As I like to enjoy Teide in an active way, here I tell you some of the activities that I like to do in the top of the island. In all
these activities you have to keep in mind that walking above 2000
metres requiere some physical preparation, montaneering experince, and good equipment and weather
conditions. Also, be aware that there is nothing to buy food or water during the trails in the National Park.
- Ascent from the Parador Nacional to Alto de Guajara.
- Departure from 2100 meters of altitude and arrival at 2700 meters.
- I usually take about 2.5 hours to go up and 2 hours to go down
- It is not very demanding. Easy to follow.
- Path number 15.
- Ascent from the Roques de García to Pico Viejo.
- Departure from 2100 meters of altitude and arrival at 3100 meters.
- I usually take about 4.5 hours to go up and 3.5 hours to go down
- A little demanding. Easy to follow.
- Path number 23
- Night in the Altavista refuge and see sunrise at the peak (3718 m)
- Departure from Montaña Blanca at 2200 meters altitude and sleep in the refuge Alta Vista at 3270 m.
- You have to reserve the refuge (€ 21) well in advance. For more information consult its official website.
- Do not leave anything valuable in the car at Montaña Blanca.
- Particularly recommended close to full moon.
- Extremely cold at the summit to see sunrise.
- I usually leave in the afternoon, arrive at dusk, and leave the next day with enough time to reach the summit to see the sunrise. You have to go down from the summit to La Rambleta (upper station of the Telesférico) before 9 in the morning.
- Demanding. Easy to follow although during the night it could be complicated, so you have to be very caution and I would not go without a good equipment.
- Path number 7 and 10.
- Ascent from Montaña Blanca to the Teide peak in one day.
- Departure from 2200 meters of altitude and arrival at 3718 meters.
- It is VERY demanding. I usually go in a longer diversion and I take about 10 hours.
- It can be very cold at the summit.
- Permission (free) is required to access the peak after 9 am => Official Website
- Path number 7 and 10
- Ascent by Teleferico to the Teide peak in one day.
- The cable car starts from 2,200 meters and ends at 3,500 meters. Then you go up a path to the top at 3718 meters, only if you have a permit.
- It is demanding because of altitude sickness.
- The price of the Cable Car and the management of the permit can be seen on its official website.
- Trail number 10
- 7 Cañadas around full moon.
- Practically flat and very easy to follow.
- I like to do it this way: drive up to the Parador. Take the bus number 348 that leaves the Parador at 4pm and get off at the Portillo. Start walking along the path that starts in front of the visitor center. At normal pace you could reached the car around 11 pm. Very beautiful!!
- Trail number 4
- Although the National Park has a visitor center within the park itself, there is also another visitor center in the city of La Orotava that is very interesting. - Location on Google Maps.
